A post mortem photograph of Queen Victoria under her post mortem photograph of her late husband Prince Albert.
Post Mortem Photography – or Memento Mori photography – became popular as access to photography became more affordable. The subjects were posed, sometimes as if sleeping in their beds, sometimes propped up as if still completely full of life. The living occasionally posed with dead, making for a macabre family picture.
Queen Victoria, somewhat notorious for her obsession with her late husband Prince Albert, slept beneath his post mortem image. Her very own post mortem photo shows her doing just that.
Memento Mori means “remember you must die”
