Bruce McArthur

The ongoing investigation of alleged serial killer Thomas Donald Bruce McArthur (born October 8, 1951).

McArthur was arrested January 18, 2018 for the murders of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen. As of April, he has been charged with 8 separate first degree murders. Although the investigation is still ongoing.

McArthur’s choice of victims aren’t what are traditionally expected. They were gay men, and generally of middle or southern Asian decent, so a vulnerable population in that aspect. But his victims were also adult men between the ages of 37 and 59, a population not commonly targeted by serial killers.

McArthur generally found his victims in Toronto’s “Gay Village” and disappearances link him to dates of operation between 2010 to 2017. However, there is suspicion that McArthur may have also been responsible for murders and disappearances in the gay village as far back as the 1970s.

McArthur used gay dating apps, local clubs, and the BDSM community to reach his victims. It is generally believed that he would get submissive men into compromising positions and carry on his sadism long past the point of safe words. He would then dismember his victims and place their bodies in large planter boxes, which he had access to as a self employed landscaper.

The Investigation

The investigations really began in 2012 during something called Project Houston.
Project Houston

attempted to link three missing persons beginning with Skandaraj Navaratnam (a romantic partner of McArthur) and then later including Abdulbasir Faizi and Majeed Kayhan. They hoped to find a perpetrator, but the case was closed as of 2016 without conclusion.

In June, 2017, Andrew Kinsman went missing after gay pride weekend, and a friend of Andrew’s began looking for him. He began the Missing Rainbow Community, a Facebook/social media group dedicated to finding the whereabouts of Kinsman and other missing persons from the local LGBT community. The Missing Rainbow Community, although flawed, did connect and spread through social media the missing persons from Project Houston and Kinsman, as well as adding Selim Esen.

This civilian effort led the Toronto police to create Project Prism, an attempt to find commonalities among the missing gay men. Sometime around August or September, Project Prism was able to connect McArthur to Kinsman’s disappearance. In October they recovered his Dodge Caravan, which he had sold over 40 miles out of Toronto. They were able to find traces of blood in the vehicle.

The Victims

McArthur has been charged for the murders of all the men from Project Houston and Prism, plus three more. These men are:

  • Skandaraj “Skanda” Navaratnam (ph)
  • Abdulbasir “Basir” Faizi (ph)
  • Majeed “Hamid” Kaghan (ph)
  • Andrew Kinsman (pp)
  • Selim Esen (pp)
  • Soroush Mahmudi
  • Dean Lisowick
  • Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam

All of the men, except Kinsman, were of middle or southern Asian origins and many of them hid their homosexual behaviors from their families, wives and children.

Often when men like this went missing police would attribute it to them just leaving town. This is partially due to their vulnerability in the community, and partially due to a general assumption that men can take care of themselves.

Much is still not known about this case as the investigation is still ongoing. Police are keeping some things from public knowledge and some things are simply not yet known. I hope closure and justice comes to the families of these victims.
