I loved my sister, more than anything in the world. Really, because I never found love like so many around me did. Jessie did and I was so happy for her, I thought she was the one who earned it the most.
Her husband seemed almost perfect, handsome with quite the brain. He worked as an engineer by some big company and earned some big money there. My sister was an editor for a small town newspaper, but she stopped with that when she got pregnant. Both had decided that Marcel earned enough for them both, soon for all three, that she could stay home and make sure their future child got the best upbringing they could get.
So, nine months later Jacob was born and he was like an angel. They loved him, our parents loved him and I loved him. I came to see him a lot and was just sold. His light blue eyes, looking curious around him, his short blond hair and his chubby limbs. How could you not love him? Of course, my sister complained a lot about how much she missed her sleep and how tired she was. Having kids was apparently a big deal, but I wasn’t afraid that I would ever have them. Never found love. I dated a man, but he seemed to like to have some extra on the side. My still pregnant sister helped me through that difficult time and I decided to never try to find love again, because I was afraid for another heartbreak. Believe me or not, I was happy with it. Still am.
So, two years passed and Jessie got bored of being home the whole time. Jacob was not much trouble and she missed some variety in her life. It wasn’t really a surprise for any of us when she got a job as editor again, this time for a bigger company. Everything fine and well, but someone needed to keep an eye on Jacob. No doubt that Jessie and Marcel went to me for that. I worked in the evenings, so I was free at day and I loved their little boy. The best choice they could have made. It was like a ritual, every Monday, Tuesday and Friday I was Jacob’s babysitter and that went on for two years. Two years and then it happened.
An accident, a horrible accident. It was Saturday evening and Jessie and Marcel went for dinner together. Jacob, like always, was with me that evening. The restaurant wasn’t even that far from town, what made it all so much stranger to people. When they drove to it, their car had suddenly swerved from the road and hit a tree. There were no survivors. Both were killed. Unbelievable, isn’t it? I couldn’t believe it either, that it happened. There was a police investigation and they found out that one the brakes didn’t work properly anymore before the accident happened. They blamed it on bad maintenance and stopped any further investigation. It was only logical if I adopted Jacob after that and since my pay had become better, I was sure we could manage together. Plus, I loved the little guy, he would be save with me.
Jacob was almost five, but he had no parents anymore. Of course, he was still young and his awareness wasn’t as strong as that from the older people who knew them. Though he does sometimes remember them, I never really notice that he really did miss them. He’s eleven now and we visit his parents at the cemetery every two weeks. We talk to them and I tell him stories about them, even if he already heard them. We’re happy together and I will make sure nothing’s going to change that soon.
Jacob always belonged to me anyway, I knew that since I met him. Everyone with a little bit of enough mechanical knowledge from cars (and I did sometimes repair my own car) could easily make something like a brake not work anymore. It was so simple and no one would ever thought that Jessie’s trustworthy and protective sister could do something like that. No moment. If I knew that it could be so easy, I would have done it much sooner.
